Quilted Pot Holders with Pocket

My grandmother had been mentioning for a few weeks that she needed new pot holders, so I wanted to make her a bunch for Christmas. I made some very plain diamond quilted ones in bright patterns and colors but decided I wanted to find a more intricate DIY for some. I ended up finding a great one HERE on a blog called Prudent Baby and used the tutorial to make these the two potholders shown above. My grandmother loved them all and I like the idea that she’ll think of me each time she’s in her kitchen! The trickiest part of these is encasing the outside with bias tape because you have to tuck each corner. My advice is to practice a bit before using your good fabric because my first couple of potholders were not so easy on the eyes!

Also make sure you check out my ruffle pocket potholder DIY!

Start off by cutting your pieces as follows:

exterior fabric –  (2) 8″ x 8″ squares and (2) 5″ x 8″ rectangles

insulation for the inside to protect your hands –  (1) 8″ x 8″ square of insul brite ironing board cover and (1) 5″ x 8″ rectangle of regular insul brite.

double fold bias tape – (1) long piece for the entire outside (about 42″ to be safe), one piece to top pocket (10″ to be safe) and (1) 6″ long piece for the loop

Start off with the rectangles and build a “sandwich” with the fabrics: one exterior piece right side down, the insul brite, the second exterior piece right side up. Pin in place and then quilt. I started 1/4″ from one of the short edges and stitched a vertical line, then continued going across using the machine’s foot as my spacer. Once the whole thing is quilted, remove the pins and sew a piece of bias tape along the top of one of the long sides of the rectangle.

Make the same sandwich but use the square pieces and quilt the same way (I did horizontal lines on this one to switch things up). Place the rectangle on top of the square and baste together as close to the edge as you can get. Pin bias tape slowly and carefully along the entire perimeter, tucking in the corners as necessary. Sew your piece of bias tape for the loop shut on the open edge and tuck into the bias tape on the perimeter in whichever corner you prefer. Stitch the bias tape in place and you’re finished!
