Painted Fabric Pillows

I’m always playing around making different removable covers for all of our throw pillows because it’s such an inexpensive way to shake things up in a room. Usually I spend a lot of time trying to find a fabric and color scheme that works with our decor and color scheme so I thought why not paint your own fabric to match exactly with what you need! Martha Stewart makes this incredible paint that works on EVERYTHING including fabric and the best part is that once it’s dry and you iron over it, it sets so it can be washed regularly. These pillows may look impressive but since they use a stencil, they are SO easy you can whip up a bunch over a weekend!  Click here to get the tutorial and see how they’re made!

Eggplant “Pasta”

My husband and I got really in to this season of the Next Food Network Star. I think the new format made it more competitive and really enjoyable to watch. After a few weeks of watching, my interest was piqued most not by one of the contestants (although I did love Justin and was glad he won) but by a long-standing member of the network, Alton Brown. I started looking for some of his more unusual recipes and stumbled upon this one. Alton is known for taking everyday ingredients and using them in a surprising and thought-provoking way. This recipe takes eggplant, makes “pasta” out of it and then builds a whole dish around it. I couldn’t get over how delicious this was and my husband hasn’t stopped talking about it so it gets my stamp of approval!  Click here to get the recipe and see how it’s made!

Embellished Lace Apron

A couple of weekends ago, a great family friend had a wedding shower at Peek n Peek resort. She’s a great cook, so it was an interactive shower complete with cooking stations and demos. I was asked to make her a special apron for the day and while looking for inspiration I thought, why not be inspired by a wedding dress. I wanted it to be lacy and sparkly and have all the romantic flare of something fancy while still being practical. I know what you’re thinking… that it’s way too nice to cook in, but I think that’s the best part. I like the juxtaposition of super fine materials being used to create something that’s typically meant to get dirty!  Click here to see more pictures and how it’s made

Pasta Alla Formiana

If you’re like me, Monday’s are always the worst for dinner. Groceries are running low from the weekend and as dinner time approaches I’m always left thinking “what in the world am I going to make”. With very few ingredients and even less steps to prep, this casserole style pasta that’s packed with flavor is the answer to my Monday-night-dinner-blues. A layer of thin cut tomatoes lines the bottom, sides and top encasing tomato sauce, lots of oregano and pasta that cooks right in the oven! It doesn’t get much easier or much more delicious than this! Click here to get the recipes and see how it’s made!

Anniversary Dinner: Last Three Courses

This is my last post about our Anniversary Dinner and it has been really great to relive it with all of you! The last three course were “Le Trou Normand” (which is a palate cleanser), the cheese course and the dessert course. These were so easy because it was all either bought prepared or ordered from somewhere else. We had an apple and calvados sorbet for Le Trou Normand, assorted cheeses with crackers and baguettes for the cheese course, and a red velvet cake and macarons for dessert! On a side note before I forget, I wanted to give you all a little weekend treat so now through Sunday if you use coupon code FREESHIP in my Etsy Shop, you can receive free shipping on all orders!  Click here to read more about the last three courses!

Anniversary Dinner: Main Course

For the main course of our anniversary dinner, I made Julia Child’s Coq Au Vin with Parsley Potatoes. Coq Au Vin means “chicken in red wine” and it has delicious brown-braised onions, bacon and sautéed mushrooms in it too. This was the dish that took the most time to make, but most everything else was prepared ahead of time so this was one of the few things that I had to make the day of. This would be a great dish for a dinner party, the chicken is so tender and flavorful and with the addition of the mushrooms, bacon and onions it doesn’t get much better!  Click here to get the recipe and see how it’s made!

DIY Belle Noel Ponytail Chains

I still have a couple of posts to finish off my Anniversary Dinner series (see the first three posts here, here and here) but I thought I’d break it up a bit with an easy designer DIY. I first saw these on Kim Kardashian last year and they come from a collaboration line she did with Pascal Mouwad for the Belle Noel Jewelry line. I decided to shorten the chain mostly because I have shorter hair but also because I felt like hers hung way too low. I also liked the idea of shortening the strands of chain because then you can wear it a ton of different ways. You can wear it like it’s shown above, wear it with your hair totally down or throw your hair up in a bun and wear it underneath for a chic surprise! I love this because it makes the simplest of hairstyles look really cool! If you want to purchase my DIY of these designer ponytail chains, just head over to my Etsy Shop! Anniversary Dinner: Fish Course

A couple of years ago my parents got me a deluxe box set of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking books for Christmas.  I love it for the obvious reason that it’s like the Bible for French cuisine but also because the books and the box are cloth bound giving it an antique feel. This recipe, that I used for the fish course of our meal, comes from Volume one of these books. It’s called Coquilles St. Jacques à la Provençale which is scallops gratinéed with wine, garlic and herbs… and it happened to be my favorite course of the night (click  here to see the decor for the meal and here to see the aperitifs and hors d’oeuvres). This is a really great way to prepare scallops if you’re looking for an alternative to simply searing them. You can prepare this entire dish well ahead of time and then broil it to gratin right before serving. Click here to get the recipe and see how it’s made!

Anniversary Dinner: Aperitifs and Hors D’Oeuvres

On Monday I gave you a peek at the decor and the menu for our first anniversary dinner and today’s post is all about the first two courses! We started the meal off with a delicious blackberry flavored aperitif (which is how the French like to start a meal) and moved right into two incredibly decadent hors d’oeuvres. The first is Brie en Croute (brie in crust) which is a wheel of brie topped with walnuts sautéed in butter and brown sugar wrapped in puff pastry and baked until golden brown. The second hors d’oeuvres was Fromage de Chèvre, Canneberges et Noix Canapés (goat cheese, walnut and cranberry canapés) which is the aforementioned ingredients on top of toasted baguette slices. We took our time eating this meal (over the course of 6 hours) so this was a great and hearty start.  Click here to get the recipes and see how they’re made!

Anniversary Dinner: Decor

Tomorrow my husband and I will celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. Since people are still talking about the dinner I planned for our first anniversary, I thought I’d dedicate all the posts this week to different aspects of that. Since it was our first, I didn’t want to go out somewhere because I wanted it to just be the two of us so I planned this crazy extravagant french themed evening. After weeks of planning, cooking, decorating, ordering and designing we had an incredible evening that included a seven course authentic french meal. It was so much work, but our anniversary couldn’t have been more perfect so it was definitely worth it. Today’s post will be on the decor and tablescapes and the rest of the week will be dedicated to the recipes for each course of the meal! Click here to see all of of the decor!
